Attached to the Oaks is a 40-bed residential nursing care complex providing 24 hour full nursing care, and a daycare nursery for 32 children for use by staff, residents of New Earswick and the wider public.
Hartrigg Oaks in the Garden Village suburb of New Earswick, York, was the first full Continuing Care Community to be built in the UK. Developed by the pioneering Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust it comprises 152 Independent Cottages, a 42 bed Care Home and a wide range of communal facilities.
The site layout segregates vehicular from pedestrian traffic. Vehicular access is by an oval distributor road; to the outside are small access courts serving about 8 dwellings and in the centre, the oval is traffic free. A web of footpaths radiates out from the centre complex so that every bungalow resident enjoys direct and barrier-free access throughout the site.
Joseph Rowntree elected to build the village for his workforce in the Garden Village style as this reflects very eloquently the Quaker tenets of simplicity, tolerance, equality and peace. In developing the designs for Hartrigg Oaks our intention was to create an 21st Century extension to the Garden Village and create an egalitarian community where residents from all walks of life can live together as one community.
