Urban Social Housing

Quoted in the DOE Housing Design Guide as an exemplar housing community project Bretgate has stood the test of time. It is as successful today as it was on completion. It forms a residential sanctuary within an otherwise very urban landscape. Immediately within York’s City walls the scheme adopts the existing street pattern to knit itself into it’s surroundings, setting the ‘outer’ building line directly onto the rear of the public footpath.

This enables each property to have a dual aspect; front entrance off the street and a more private view and connection to a monitored, safe and invitingly scaled landscaped private courtyard.

The massing of the scheme picks up on both the heights and forms of existing adjacent to inform it’s language.
