Ping Le Regeneration Master plan, Qiong Lai, Sichuan, China. An Ancient Town Reborn.
Ping Le Regeneration Master plan covers a total area of 4km2. The brief required that the master planner provide a plan for the regeneration of a Chinese Ancient Town. However, upon inspection we found that the ancient element had been destroyed some earlier and that which remained was was built upon the earlier street patterns and in some cases reusing the original materials. At some point in the 21st century some local officials had come up with various ideas of what they felt was an ancient town or least what they expected to see themselves.
One thing that was apparent, was the community culture and the undeniable fact that the town had been important in the past. We now had some foundation, the building blocks to work with and so the regeneration master plan was formed, with the single biggest contributing factor being the local people themselves.
The Ping Le Story to date has been a fascinating one, and a highly successful one in terms of design, social commitment, community involvement, and profit not just for the developer but for the inhabitants themselves.
